Election results to be
ratified on Wednesday

PHILIPSBURG--The Main Voting Bureau will ratify the April 20 Island Council election results on Wednesday April 25 during a public session. All votes cast will be reviewed and the final result of the election will be ratified.

Chairman of the Main Voting Bureau Lt. Governor Franklyn Richards, in a press release, congratulated the public of St. Maarten for their excellent behaviour during the elections, especially when taking in account the lifting of the ban on the sale of alcohol.

He also thanked all persons who served at the polling stations for their cooperation; especially the persons who functioned and assisted at the Main Voting Bureau operation centre.

It is also encouraging to note that most political propaganda materials have already been removed. Political parties and candidates that still have propaganda materials displayed on public roads are urged to remove these in the coming days.

With the election results now known, Governor Richards makes an appeal to the elected persons to serve in the Island Council as of July 2, 2007, and start offering the people of St. Maarten the best possible representation. “This is of vital importance, considering the preparations that will have to be completed, in connection with St. Maarten attaining a separate status, namely a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, by December 15, 2008.”

As chairman of the Island Council and of the Executive Council, Richards expects a very busy, yet productive and cooperative period, functioning alongside members of the new island council. “It should certainly be possible for the two political factions that now remain in the Island Council, to work together in the best interest of St. Maarten. This would underscore the need to have all St. Maarten citizens doing everything in their power to help the island assume the responsibilities associated with its new constitutional status,” Richards said.
