Road March winner will
rule the streets for Carnival

PHILIPSBURG--One of the biggest local events for St. Maarten Carnival, the Road March competition, which will be judged on stage for the third consecutive year, is expected to be even bigger this year as twelve calypsonians and six bands will attempt to win the title of Road March King.

The winner of this competition will have his or her song rule the streets for Jouvert Jump-up and the Grand Carnival Parade.

The competition is set at the Festival Village for Wednesday, April 25, and admission is US $5 at the gate.

The winner will walk away with US $5,000, a trophy and crown and his/her song will be the main song throughout the remainder of Carnival. Competition is usually very high for this title, as it is the one that suggests that the winner’s song had the best Soca music beat for the entire Carnival season.

Competing this year as individuals are Big Mack, Singing Olivia, X-Rey, Baker Jr., Oddyssey, King Tempo, Chipman, Prince, defending Road March King King T-Mo, Fish the Boss, Mighty Pepper, and Dr. Jones. The bands competing are Addie and the Band, Ebony, Motion Band, Island Heat, Bad Boyzz, and Heart Attack International Band.

Each individual and band will be allowed to perform one song, which will be judged by a keenly selected panel of judges. At the end the person with the highest number of points in the categories lyrics, diction, melody, clarity and stage presence will be crowned the 2007 Road March King.
