Gendarmes suspended after
drug consumption allegations
MARIGOT--Three St. Martin-based Gendarmes have been suspended from duty until further notice following an incident a week ago in which drugs confiscated during a routine patrol were allegedly not declared by them.
Furthermore, they reportedly retained the confiscated drugs for their personal use, Guadeloupe daily France Antilles reported.
According to the report, the Gendarmes in question stopped a car during a routine night patrol and confiscated drugs from a man. They later went to the man’s house and confiscated more drugs. However, these were allegedly not declared.
Gendarmerie spokesman Capitaine Lalouat confirmed the three had been suspended but gave no more details.
When contacted by The Daily Herald yesterday the Guadeloupe Prosecutor confirmed the France Antilles report as correct. He added a judicial process was underway in Guadeloupe regarding the incident. It had not been reported on in the national press. The France Antilles report indicated the Gendarmes had admitted their guilt to investigators.
