Humanitarian association opts
to work with homeless shelter

MARIGOT--Association Aide Humanitaire et Action Sociale Sans Frontières (AHASF) is collaborating with the homeless shelter Manteau de St. Martin to increase support, aid, and materials for the shelter.

The two-year-old association has a board of five and ten members and is presided over by Joceleyne Germain.

Father Charles who runs the shelter welcomed the support of the association last week saying the association and the shelter both have common aims of supporting the less advantaged and eliminating the stigma associated with society’s attitudes toward homeless people.

“This association’s board came to me quite spontaneously and offered their support,” said Charles. “One of the first things they did was deliver $200 worth of food for the shelter. We have eleven staff members in total here but it is still too little to cope with the social problems out there, so support in whatever form is always welcome.”

AHASF secretary Marc-Gerald Menard said his association works to help those in need on both sides of the island. To date, it has not received any financial support from Government.

“What we do is go around the island collecting donations and organising fund raising events,” said Menard. “With the money we then decide who we can help. For example with the fire in Cay Bay we went there to see what we could do to help. If we can’t help then we recommend someone else who can.”
