Second escapee
turns himself in

PHILIPSBURG--R. “Flamingo” Arrindell, who escaped from the Pointe Blanche prison on Monday, April 30, the same day as the Grand Carnival Parade, reported back to the detention facility on Tuesday, May 8, around 7:00am.

Police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson reported Tuesday that shortly after Arrindell’s arrival at the prison, the police had received a call from prison authorities informing them of his return.

After having been a fugitive for just over a week, Arrindell will now have to answer to detectives at the Philipsburg police station about his escape and events that transpired during his time on the run.

He had escaped with another prisoner E.A.D. whose freedom was short-lived, as he was recaptured on the afternoon of his escape after a brief chase on foot in the vicinity of the Vineyard Building.

Prison Director Rudsel Ricardo explained that Checkmate security officers had spotted the two prisoners as they climbed the kitchen roof and ran over to the living section where they slid down a rope made from bedsheets. Unfortunately, the security guards’ shouts and whistles were not enough to alert the few officers on duty.

Ricardo and Chief Prosecutor Taco Stein lamented the problems resulting from a significant staff shortage at the prison and expressed the hope that something would be done soon to improve security conditions there.

The police also say they are still searching for three nationals of the Dominican Republic, all women, who fled from a guesthouse where they were being kept pending repatriation to their homeland following a dispute between them and management of a local brothel where they had come to work.

The three women have been identified as Kenia Geurrero-Pache, Jaimy Marte and Maria Elena Mateo-Vargas.

Authorities are also still searching for Jamaican Omar Dwight McGregor, who escaped following a fight with airport Immigration officers who were trying to repatriate him shortly after he had arrived on a flight.

Anyone with information that could lead to the capture of these four persons should contact police at 542-2222.
