Meet Gli-Gli crew
at library on Friday

PHILIPSBURG--A traditional Amerindian canoe named Gli-Gli with a crew of Carib descendants will arrive in St. Maarten Friday as part of a sea journey that started in Antigua on May 6 and will end in the British Virgin Island at the end of the month. Their mission is to draw attention to the survival and resurgence of their culture and to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the canoe’s creation.

At each stop along the way, the crew will provide information about Carib culture, perform traditional music, demonstrate their unique craft-making techniques and show the BBC documentary “The Quest of the Carib Canoe,” a film about Gli-Gli’s historic sailing trip from Dominica, where it was built, to Guyana 10 years ago.

Sint Maarten National Heritage Foundation in cooperation with Philipsburg Jubilee Library will be hosting the Carib Indians during their visit to St. Maarten on Friday. As schools are closed that day, schoolchildren and adults are invited to the library to meet with the canoe crew from 9:00am until 12:00pm.

From the library, the Gli-Gli crew will go to the Museum on Front Street, where a lunch will be offered to them in honour of International Museum Day. A cultural exchange is organised at Taloula

Mango’s restaurant on the Great Bay beach promenade, starting at 5:30pm.

The Gli-Gli will sail via Simpson Bay Lagoon to French St. Martin, where organisations will also be hosting a programme, on Saturday, May 19.
