Men assault rescuer
of egg-laying turtle
MARIGOT--Two St. Martiners, brothers age 52 and 55, have been detained by Gendarmes for injuring a woman who attempted to save a turtle the men wanted to steal, despite the fact the turtle was on the beach laying eggs.
According to Friday’s report, an incident with one of the poachers occurred at the beginning of the month when a beach walker managed to save an egg-laying turtle by picking it up and returning it the water, much to the fury of the poacher. The walker had filed a complaint about the incident with the Gendarmerie.
On Sunday, May 11 at 12:30pm, the same female walker was confronted by the same poacher on the beach. This time, she was attacked with a machete and was pelted with rocks.
Another passer-by had managed to disarm the woman’s attacker, but the brother of the attacker drove up with his car and deliberately ran into the woman, who was later transported to hospital with unspecified injuries. She was given eight days off from work to recuperate.
The two men have been summoned to court in St. Martin on October 2 to answer charges relating to the offences.
