House burglaries on the
rise in French Quarter

FRENCH QUARTER--Residents in French Quarter are complaining that the Gendarmes aren’t doing enough to catch thieves responsible for a resurgence of house break-ins in their neighbourhoods.

Sandra Hazel, a resident of Impasse Alexander and the mother of one son, is the latest victim to have had her house broken into last Sunday for the second time. She reported her son had come home to find the house ransacked and drawers emptied. Items stolen included stereo equipment, games, electronic items, toy cars, jewellery, a DVD player and a TV.

However, Hazel was fortunate to get her and her son’s possessions back after neighbours suggested they look around the area to see if the missing items might be hidden. Sure enough they found their stolen possessions hidden in some bushes in garbage bags.

Still, Hazel and other victims of robberies want the Gendarmerie to be more proactive in finding the culprits. She said she had received no satisfaction from the Gendarmerie after the first break-in incident and to her knowledge no one had been arrested.
