Parade, all-day programme
to mark Emancipation Day
PHILIPSBURG--A packed day-long programme of activities will mark the observances for this year’s Emancipation Day on Sunday, July 1.
All activities will be held in front of the Government Administration Building and the day’s programme will get underway with a traditional breakfast.
The programme includes an emancipation parade featuring drummers, an official ceremony which will be addressed by representatives from both sides of the island, including Culture Commissioner Louie Laveist and lots of traditional games, music, dances and other traditional activities.
Several dance groups including Imbali Centre for Creative Movement are expected to make presentations. One of the highlights is a lunch that will include dishes from the various nationalities represented on the island.
“Everyone should celebrate this day in tribute to our ancestors and as a clarion to seek and defend freedom for ourselves and all generations to come,” Laveist said at a press conference on Thursday.
The Commissioner said he was enthusiastic about celebrations for the day.
