Suspended Gendarmes still
awaiting results of enquiry

MARIGOT--Commandant Loïc Baras said yesterday he did not know exactly when the final judgement would be made on the case of the three Gendarmes suspended last month for allegedly planting drugs in a house in Agrément, but added investigation into the affair continues.

“They are officially suspended so they are not working but they have to be available to report to the Prosecutor during the enquiry,” said Baras. “The enquiry still has to determine whether they are guilty or not guilty, and what each Gendarme could face depending on each one’s involvement.”

He declined to speculate on what punishment they would face if found guilty.

The Gendarmes allegedly planted the drugs in a house in Agrément when previous searches at the same house turned up no evidence of drugs. The victim, however, said he had been framed and took a lawyer to defend him of the charges. An investigation into the allegations was subsequently launched.

Meanwhile, asked to comment on the still unsolved murder of Angélique Chauvire, he said this investigation is also in progress and being handled from Guadeloupe.

“There is still more investigating to be done but it’s not easy because there are some technical difficulties associated with having both Dutch and French sides involved. But I’m not at liberty to talk about possible suspects, or other details, because of confidentiality surrounding the case.”

Angélique Chauvire was murdered just over a year ago. Her body was found in Dawn Beach.
