Gendarmes search students
at French Quarter Collège

MARIGOT--The Gendarmerie assisted by Police Municipale officers carried out a search of some 150 students at the French Quarter Collège on Monday morning as a preventative measure to uncover weapons that students might try to smuggle into the school.

Nothing was discovered, however, and no fines were issued. The Gendarmerie noted that the significance of the exercise was to impress on students that educational facilities prepared students for their future and should be respected.

A business in French Cul-de-Sac was robbed of oxygen and acetylene bottles, and blowtorches, in the early hours of Monday. The Gendarmerie said these materials were used to break open safes and to facilitate entry into locked and protected premises. It warned business owners to be on their guard.

Several break-ins to cars in the parking areas of Orient Beach were reported by upset tourists during the day on Sunday.

A woman reported on Sunday evening that an Antillean man at the Agrément roundabout had thrown stones at her car for unknown reasons. She was not hurt and the car was not badly damaged.

A car driver involved in a minor accident in Baie Nettle at 4:30am Sunday morning tested positive for alcohol consumption and was detained. He had no driver’s licence.

A car caught on fire opposite Beach Plaza Hotel on Saturday around midnight. The Fire Brigade was called to extinguish the fire and found the car was an abandoned wreck.

A woman reported earlier on Saturday, at 11:00pm, that she had been attacked on Rue Paul Mingau in Concordia and her purse stolen by thieves on a scooter. A similar incident occurred at the former Grand St. Martin Hotel at 10:00pm.

Five to six Antilleans were apprehended on Saturday evening in simultaneous sweeps in Oyster Pond, French Cul-de-Sac, and French Quarter. The Gendarmerie said this gang was responsible for a number of thefts of motorcycles and scooters during the last few weeks.
