Agrément property owner
in altercation with Haitians

MARIGOT--A St. Martiner who owns property in Agrément reportedly clashed with a mob of Haitians on Monday following his complaint that the Haitians had been squatting on his property for years.

Leopold James, President of St. Martin Nation Building Foundation (SNBF) and host of Nation Talk, told The Daily Herald Monday, that the St. Martiner is in a battle to reclaim property that the Haitians are squatting on.

He said a fight started when the owner told the man not to trespass on his property. The Haitian refused and as the fight started, a “mob” of Haitians joined in, James reported.

“This showdown with Haitians is seen as a simmering confrontation that might cause an uprising of native St. Martin people against many of the thousands of ‘illegal immigrants’ flocking into the island, disrespecting the laws of the country and threatening the very existence of native St. Martin people,” said James.

The owner was due to report the incident to the Gendarmerie on Monday morning. However, when contacted yesterday, Commandant Baras said he was unaware of the incident and could not confirm whether Gendarmes had been called to intervene.

Spokesman Capitaine Lalouat is currently on holiday.
