Teenager dies in
scooter accident
COLE BAY--H. Duinkerk, a 13-year old boy born in St. Maarten, died in a scooter accident on Welfare Road Sunday evening. He was rushed to the St. Maarten Medical Center in critical condition and at 8:40, Dr. Holiday officially declared him dead.
Police spokesman Chief Inspector Johan “Janchi” Leonard told The Daily Herald Duinkerk had been riding a scooter MF-469 in the direction of Simpson Bay when he hit a light pole on the side of the road near Tropicana Casino.
Leonard said police were still investigating the exact cause of the accident. Unconfirmed reports have it that it was a hit-and-run case.
Next to the victim’s body, police found a helmet but Leonard couldn’t say whether Duinkerk had been wearing the helmet at the time of the accident.
He suffered a scull base fracture which caused his death. A second youngster who had also been on the scooter visited SMMC later in the evening with injuries to his mouth.
Leonard said police would question him and try to determine exactly what had caused the accident. The police force is requesting the cooperation of persons who witnessed the accident. They should call without delay and provide information that would help solve this case.
