Loor owned offshore company,
bank documents confiscated
~ Formal statement expected from Prosecutor ~
PHILIPSBURG--Chief Public Prosecutor Taco Stein confirmed Tuesday that several bank documents belonging to detained police commissioner Marcel Loor have been confiscated.
Stein also confirmed that the commissioner was the owner of offshore companies registered with a local Trust Company. He said a search had been conducted at the office of the Trust Company two days after Loor’s arrest.
He said, however, that it was not an illegal act in itself to own offshore companies or accounts although it would not be considered a normal thing for a police officer.
Stein also said investigators were still dealing primarily with allegations of forgery and acceptance of bribes which were made against the commissioner by Trinidad- born local resident G.Y. who was detained a few weeks ago on human trafficking charges.
He said there had been no investigation linked to Loor prior to that, but since then the issue of Loor owning a security company that provided armed guard services had also come to the forefront.
Stein said the matter involving the security company was being dealt with as a disciplinary matter by police, and was not a main concern in the ongoing criminal investigation targeting the high-ranking police officer.
Meanwhile, Stein has declined to comment on reports that investigators have uncovered evidence that Loor was the owner of several bank accounts that had been used for unusual or irregular transactions.
He also declined to comment Tuesday on reports that the prosecutor’s office had confiscated some US$200,000 from Loor’s St. John’s Estate home when he was detained on Tuesday, June 19.
Stein said he would decline to comment on that issue until Wednesday, today, when he would make a formal statement.
Loor is currently serving the remainder of his first eight-day pre-detention, following the initial 48-hour detention by the public prosecutor. The public prosecutor’s office is expected to request a second eight-day extension of Loor’s pre-trial detention.
For the time being, while federal detectives continue their investigation, Loor remains incarcerated in the Nursing Ward at Pointe Blanche Prison.
