Gendarmerie makes headway
in cracking cycle of car thefts

MARIGOT--The Gendarmerie confirmed over the weekend it had made significant breakthroughs in disrupting the spate of car thefts during the past month with the announcement of three arrests. It expects more arrests to be made shortly.

Dutch side resident P.T. and a man M.P. from the Dominican Republic have both received prison sentences in Guadeloupe relating to car thefts in Orient Bay.

A third individual H.G. (37), also from the Dominican Republic, was released by the prosecutor pending further investigation into his activities.

Consistent surveillance has produced good results, the release stated, enabling stolen cars and possible suspects to be identified. However, further evidence of criminal activity needs to be gathered before the suspects can be arrested.

Two other men, a 25-year-old St. Martiner from French Quarter and another from the Dutch side, had been charged with stripping stolen cars and received prison sentences earlier in the month.
