No small craft in bridge
channel during opening
SIMPSON BAY--Mariners and water sports enthusiasts are urged by Simpson Bay Lagoon Authority (SLAC) to observe all safety measures in the vicinity of the Simpson Bay Bridge.
SLAC Managing Director Russell Voges said in a Government Information Service (GIS) press statement that watercrafts such as kayaks, rhinos, jet skis, dinghies and tenders continuously cross the bridge channel during openings. This hampers and endangers the regular traffic of larger vessels.
“The bridge openings are in shortest time span possible. We ask the crossing vessels to cue up and speed up as quickly as possible. It is strictly forbidden for these smaller boats and crafts to be in the bridge channel during opening times,” Voges said.
The same applies to cement and sand cargo freighters, barges and tug boats that berth at the BBW freight dock at the bridge channel entrance. “They are also not allowed to manoeuvre in the channel during opening times.”
Voges appealed to companies that utilize the dock and water sport equipment rental agencies to inform tourists and others that they should stay away from the bridge channel at opening times. “We all have to work together in order to maintain safety of our waterways at all times.”
