Motorcycle, scooter, Quad riders
should wear helmets starting now
PHILIPSBURG--As part of a campaign on road safety, Traffic Affairs Commissioner Louie Laveist is encouraging the use of safety helmets by all operators of motorcycles, Quads, trikes and scooters.
“It is strongly recommended that those riding Quads and trikes wear safety helmets for their own personal safety. All users of two-wheel motorised vehicles should obey the laws of the land and wear their safety helmets,” the Government Information Services (GIS) quoted Laveist as saying.
The GIS press release stated that wearing safety helmets while riding motorcycles, Quads, trikes and scooters can save your life and reduce the risk of injuries. Helmets are designed to help prevent injuries to your head due to a serious fall or crash, which can cause permanent brain damage or death.
Laveist said, “It’s your responsibility towards not only yourself, but your family. Your family expects you to wear your safety helmet every time you leave the house to go on the road. Be safe and drive wisely.”
Road accidents are a major cause of death of young people aged 5-24. Young drivers are prone to overestimate their own capabilities as well as those of their vehicle.
The release stated, “Statistics show that young people are over-represented in road accidents. Young people from 18-24 years represent about 10 per cent of the population, but 25 per cent of those killed in road accidents around the world.”
