Salt Walk project
set for this year
PHILIPSBURG--Residents and visitors to the island will soon be able to walk along Great Salt Pond and see where the various salt pans were located and learn about who operated them once the new Salt Walk project will be completed.
The project, which entails the construction of a wooden bridge along sections of Salt Pond, is set to start sometime towards the end of this year, Cultural Affairs Commissioner Louie Laveist and Head of New Projects, Development and Planning Kurt Ruan said Sunday. Salt pans in the Pond will also be identified, as well as the families that operated them.
The project is intended to give people a feel of the island’s history regarding salt reaping. “The Salt Walk will allow people to walk on the Pond and experience the history of the salt reaping process,” Laveist said.
Asked whether the project is feasible, given the foul odour that comes from the pond occasionally, Ruan said the scent is usually the result of an imbalance in the pond, which will be rectified. He said too that the issue of illegal dumping and disposal in the pond is currently being addressed.
