Pride: Don’t dump trash
near Great Salt Pond

PHILIPSBURG--A vacant plot of land on A.Th. Illidge Road became the dump site for several damaged slabs of concrete that create an eyesore and can end up in Great Salt Pond, causing more fill.

St. Maarten Pride Foundation was called a few days ago by the landowner, who was not only indignant about the slabs dumped illegally on his land, but also about the damage to plants, mostly cotton, that were growing along the pond edge.

According to the foundation, the company was tracked down by the Public Works Department and based on their information a fine will be issued for illegal dumping and destruction of nature.

The environmental group urged companies and the public at large to not use vacant lots near the pond or the actual pond as a dumpsite. An estimate of the damaged flora in the area will be compiled by the group and also submitted to the company for compensation.
