Road works to include
La Savane roundabout

MARIGOT--The first phase of the Regional Council’s road resurfacing project currently under way on the RN7 in Rambaud and La Savane will include the creation of a roundabout at the entrance to the Fire Station and Gendarmerie, Regional Councillor Louis Mussington disclosed on Tuesday.

He said the roundabout was needed for emergency vehicles to have a quicker exit onto the main road in times of heavy traffic flow.

Mussington also sought to make it clear that the 3-million euro road improvement project was a project sponsored by Guadeloupe’s Regional Council and not the newly installed Collectivité as some people might be thinking.

“This is a project I have been working on for some time, making numerous trips to Guadeloupe,” said Mussington. “Despite the administrative delays, I’m pleased to see it finally getting started. I have always said during the campaign it is best to continue working with the Regional Council for a defined period of time. People argued that if the deputy senator (Victorin Lurel) was re elected, which he was, he would abandon St. Martin. But that has not been the case. We will also be working together on other projects.”

Transfer of responsibilities to the Collectivité from the Region have not yet been made, he added

Other phases to be included in the road upgrading project are in Grand Case, Cul-de-Sac, Rue de Hollande and St. James at the Bellevue end of Marigot. In many areas, roads will be widened by filling in the ditches with concrete, and sidewalks will be created. The entire programme should be completed by December.

The deplorable state of the road near the cemetery in Marigot did not fall under the responsibility of the Region, Mussington pointed out, adding that he did not know who would be taking care of that section.
