Sandy Ground Beach was crowded yesterday as Anguilla Day (August Monday) celebrations once again attracted a large crowd.

Large crowd for Anguilla Day,
Miss Anguilla wins boat race

ANGUILLA--August Monday here was as great as ever this year.

There were large crowds at Sandy Ground all day enjoying the beach party and the boat races.

The usual amazing number of boats and people from St. Maarten/St. Martin were also in evidence, with the boats anchored at the northern end of the beach where a stage had been erected and where the performances took place.

The main boat race was won by Miss Anguilla, closely followed by UFO, Real Deal, Light and Peace and Bluebird. Thirteen A Class boats participated in the race, which finished around 6:00pm.

In the B Class race the winner was Alma Gloria of St. Maarten, followed by The Storm of Anguilla. In third place was Damage of St. Maarten.

The day’s other live entertainment included performances by Zouk Sensation Kassav, Crazy of Trinidad and Tobago, Anguilla’s Better Band and several local artistes. Hundreds of people from Anguilla and St. Maarten were on the beach enjoying the music, the food and the drinks and dancing.

Security was high, with the Royal Anguilla Police Force having installed special surveillance cameras and using police dogs. There were also extra lights after sundown. No incidents were reported up to press time.
