Breakwater Bridge
demolition in Sept.

PHILIPSBURG--After enduring the weight of 40 years worth of vehicles, the Breakwater Bridge on Front Street, next to Great Bay Beach Resort, will be demolished and a new one built starting in September.

A new bridge to connect Link I and Front Street has been on the books for over six years now, but government’s budgetary constraints prevented works from starting soon. The Netherlands Antilles Implementing Foundation USONA provided the NAf. 2.2 million for the project earlier this year.

Head of New Projects Development and Planning Kurt Ruan said the contract for the bridge project was awarded on August 15 to Windward Roads Infrastructure. Preparatory work commenced almost immediately after.

The contractor must complete the bridge by Friday, December 14, to ensure that the increased traffic flow in and around Philipsburg for the high tourist season and the Christmas Holidays is not hampered.

Traffic flow into Philipsburg via Link I will be routed through Fort Willem and over Prins Bernhard Bridge.

Ruan encouraged residents of Fort Willem to remove their vehicle wrecks from the roadsides in the coming days so the traffic flow is not hampered.
