NAf. 3.2 million project
gets underway at MPC
SOUTH REWARD--Milton Peters College (MPC) should be equipped with four new classrooms, a care unit, two new gym halls and a new technical and CAV classroom in the next 11 months.
Education officials broke ground to mark the start of construction of the new facilities at the school on Tuesday. The gym facilities will also be used by St. Maarten Vocational Training School students.
Education Commissioner Sarah Wescot-Williams described the groundbreaking ceremony as a small but significant event for the school. She said the construction work was possible due to the collaboration of many persons and organisations, and thanked all those who had made the construction possible.
The project has a NAf. 3,222,232 price tag and is linked to the ongoing innovations in education at the secondary level. A similar groundbreaking ceremony was held at Sundial School on Monday, September 24, and others are planned for other vocational schools in the coming days.
School Board Director Joseph Rogers said he was happy with the construction as the school had had to do without gym facilities for many years. Similar sentiments were expressed by MPC Director Yvette Halley.
Rogers said he was sure the new facilities would be of added value to the school.
Halley said she was especially pleased with the new gym facilities, as this was something she had wanted for the institution for quite some time.
Towards the end of the ceremony, several students performed a skit depicting their feelings about not having sufficient classroom space and finally seeing some work being done to alleviate overcrowding.
