Two gangs clash, three
chopped with machete

PHILIPSBURG--At least three young men were wounded in what police say was a clash between two gangs outside St. Maarten Vocational Training School on Tuesday at 10:40am.

Police met two victims outside the school following the incident. They were treated by ambulance attendants and taken to St. Maarten Medical Center for further treatment. They have been identified by police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson as T.C. and S.C.

Henson said a group of police officers had seen a third victim, who had visible blood stains on his shirt, while they were driving on Coralita Road after leaving the scene of the fight in South Reward.

The youth first tried to avoid being questioned by the police, saying he had fallen and had suffered an injury that resulted in the bloodied shirt, but when he was questioned further he told the police he had been wounded by a group of men who had exited a dark tinted car and started beating him while he was walking from school. He was handcuffed and brought to the police station after being treated.

Henson said the two groups were believed to be from Bush Road and Sucker Garden. He said the exact cause of their rivalry was unclear and the matter was being investigated.
