Inmates fight,
one wounded

PHILIPSBURG--Three inmates at the Pointe Blanche prison were taken to the Philipsburg police station’s detention cells following a fight in which at least one of them stabbed another inmate with whom they had a quarrel on Friday.

Prosecutor Dikran Sarian said the victim had been kept in the medical clinic at the prison and was being treated for minor cuts on his body. He said the Prosecutor’s Office had tried to investigate the matter, but the investigation had hit a snag when the victim declined to give a statement or to press charges.

Sarian said, “The victim has refused to talk, saying he does not want to give a statement.” He said the three suspects all claimed they had been provoked and forced to defend themselves against an attack by the victim.

Sarian said on Monday that the Prosecutor’s Office was making arrangements to send the three suspects, who all have lengthy jail sentences, to Curaçao’s Bon Futuro Prison. He said this was necessary to prevent another similar altercation between them and the victim.

He said he did not know for certain when the three suspects would be transferred to Curaçao. However, they will remain in the Philipsburg detention cells until there is an opportunity for them to be transferred.
