Ring thief
is released
PHILIPSBURG--The man R.A. of the United States of America, arrested last week on suspicion of stealing an expensive ring, was released on Monday after paying a US $10,000 fine.
The man was on vacation with his wife in St. Maarten. He visited jewellery store Oro Diamanté last week Thursday and tried to conceal a ring with an estimated value of $100,000 to $140,000.
Chief Prosecutor Taco Stein confirmed on Thursday that the man had paid the fine and would be released. Although the suspect never walked out of the jewellery store with the ring, he had tried to conceal it. Under the law, concealing something with the intention to steal it is considered a crime.
When they investigated the case, police found the ring in the jewellery store. R.A. and his wife were detained on suspicion of theft, but the woman was released last week Friday.
