Draft constitution is now
available online in English


PHILIPSBURG--The Bureau of Constitutional Affairs (BCA) has announced that Country St. Maarten’s draft constitution is now available online for download in the English language at the Bureau of Constitutional Affairs’ (BCA) Website www.countrysintmaarten.org .

The draft constitution comprises: Chapter 1, Basic Rights; Chapter 2, Government; Chapter 3, Parliament; Chapter 4, Council of State, General Audit Chamber, and the Advisory Council; Chapter 5, Legislation and Administration; Chapter 6, Judiciary system and Judiciary; and Chapter 7, Final stipulations.

Some of the basic rights covered in the draft constitution are the right to life, prohibition of torture, prohibition of slavery and forced labour, equal treatment, prohibition of discrimination, expulsion of foreigners, equal eligibility in public service, right to vote, right of petition, freedom of religion and persuasion, and freedom of speech.
