Eco-friendly bags
given to shoppers
CUL DE SAC--Shoppers at Le Grand Marché Saturday received free eco-friendly reusable shopping bags as part of the St. Maarten Telephone Group of Companies TelEm Going Green initiative.
The bags were handed out by Learning Unlimited School students and volunteers of St. Maarten Pride Foundation and Nature Foundation St. Maarten. Pride commended the company for its initiative that will reduce the use of plastic bags once shoppers use the bags consistently.
Each time a canvas bag is used for groceries it eliminates the use of 4-5 plastic bags that often end up hanging from trees as eyesores, or in the ocean where they are a threat to sea turtles and other creatures.
The environmental foundations urge all shoppers to switch to reusable bags. Pride also urges the packer boys in the supermarkets to recognise canvas bags as a positive alternative to packing groceries and to halt the doubling and tripling of plastic bags as much as possible.
