Police fine 140 persons,
tow 45 cars in controls

PHILIPSBURG--Police fined 140 vehicle owners for traffic infractions Wednesday during the first day of controls for not having paid the 2008 vehicle tax, police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson reported Thursday.

Police also towed 45 vehicles for not having 2008 licence plates showing that they had paid the vehicle tax, Henson said. The majority of fines issued were for non-payment of the tax.

The police also detained several undocumented persons during the controls, though Immigration was not their main focus. However, they let many of those undocumented persons go with the assurance from them that they would leave on their own.

“Because of the lack of space and maintenance work being carried out at the police station, after these persons were all registered, a copy of their passport was taken,” Henson reported. “And they also [had to] show a one-way [ticket] back to their country of birth. They were released and cautioned to make sure, as soon as possible, to get all their documents in order or freely return to their countries.”
