St. Peters Road
works on target
ST. PETERS--Water constantly flowing on St. Peters Road will be a thing of the past once the upgrading project, which is in full swing, is completed in September. The first section of the road has been dug up for the installation of a sewage line, utilities cables and provisions for drainage channels.
The spring water that usually covers the road will be channelled underground to keep the road dry and safe for drivers and pedestrians as well as increase the longevity of the road surface, according to Head of New Projects Development and Planning Kurt Ruan.
The road will have a hard concrete surface. The sidewalk will be paved with bricks, for beauty and functionality. The bricks can be easily removed without damaging the road surface for repairs to cables and other underground fixtures, he added. Although the sidewalk paving is several weeks away, the bricks arrived on the island recently along with the quota for the final phase of the Festival Village.
Meanwhile, Public Works Commissioner Theo Heyliger has asked residents to bear with the inconvenience of the road works. He noted that when the works are completed, property value along the road is expected to increase significantly.
The NAf. 3.5 million St. Peters Road Upgrading is part of the government’s District Improvement Programme. It is financed by the Island Government via the annual concession fee from St. Maarten Harbour Holding Company.
