Marcel Loor to appeal
his case in Supreme Court

PHILIPSBURG--Former Police Commissioner Marcel Loor has decided to launch an appeal in the Supreme Court in The Hague against the latest judgement in his case. The Joint Court of the Netherlands Antilles had sentenced Loor on April 3 to 24 months, six of which were suspended, with three years probation and payment of a NAf. 15,000 fine.

The three judges of the Joint Court found the former Head of the Immigration and Naturalisation Department guilty of forgery of Immigration Re-entry Forms between January 2002 and June 2007, allowing illegal immigrants entrance to the island.

In doing so, Loor had forced immigration officers to cooperate in illegal operations and had brought corruption into the Police Force, the Joint Court stated in its ruling.

The Appeal Court acquitted Loor of the charge that he had accepted bribes to issue entry permits, for lack of proof.

Despite the fact that the appeal case resulted in a much lower sentence than was meted out by the Court in First Instance in November 2007, when Loor was sentenced to four years and a NAf. 600,000 fine, while NAf. 191,254.92 had to be paid back to the Coast Guard, Loor and his legal advisors have decided to launch another appeal.

“Mister Loor has great respect for the Court of Appeal of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba, and he is happy with the judgement,” Loor’s attorney Richard Gibson Jr. stated in a press release that was issued Monday.

“However, after analyses of the judgement as handed down by the Court of Appeal the defence has decided to request the Supreme Court to review the case and provide its view on certain legal aspects of the case,” Gibson said.

Well-known attorney in criminal cases Gerard Spong has already been contacted on the matter, it was added.
