Man drowns
at Le Galion

MARIGOT--A 54-year-old man from French Quarter drowned at Baie de L’Embouchure on Thursday, May 1, the Gendarmerie reported.

The incident occurred at 1:40pm when the man who was swimming off the beach apparently began to make signals indicating he was experiencing difficulties. Witnesses were able to haul the man into a boat and take him ashore. In spite of efforts by the Fire Brigade and a doctor to revive the man through CPR, he passed away.

Also on Thursday, a 35-year-old man was taken into custody for holding up a sandwich truck vendor with a gun at about 9:00pm in Marigot. The man had ordered a sandwich but instead of paying when it was produced, he pulled out his gun and proceeded to attack the vendor. Although he was able to flee the scene, Gendarmes were able to apprehend him later around 11:00pm. He was transferred to Guadeloupe to face charges for this and other incidents.

On Saturday at 3:45pm, Gendarmes detained a 53-year-old man in Marigot who had threatened a female peanut vendor with a knife and a machete. He will be summoned to court on October 2, 2008.

The Gendarmerie advised the public to always make a note of the serial numbers on electronic items as there is a good chance that stolen items, if found, can be returned to their rightful owners. Without the serial numbers positive identification is more difficult.

The Gendarmerie added that there is currently an increase in thefts and break-ins to houses and apartments. Multi-media items and televisions are popular items that are stolen.

However, on Saturday at 3:30pm, Gendarmes made a breakthrough by detaining one thief in Marigot who was in possession of a brand new portable laptop, two Nano Ipods, a smart phone and cellular phone.
