Twenty arrested in
Immigration controls
PHILIPSBURG/COLE BAY--Twenty undocumented residents of St. Maarten have been detained since Monday during random Immigration checks in Cole Bay and Cay Hill, the police reported Wednesday.
Most of the detainees originated from the Dominican Republic, police spokesman Chief Inspector Johan “Janchi” Leonard told The Daily Herald. Other undocumented immigrants caught during the controls came from China, Jamaica and Guyana.
Police intend to heighten their spot-checks for legal status on the island by being more consistent with controls, Leonard said. “These types of controls will continue and will happen [throughout the Dutch side of] the island,” he said.
