After the hullabaloo

The leaders of the two political parties represented in the Island Council traded barbs and accusations yesterday about the playing of political games. Well, the extent to which the public was treated to the spectacle of political gamesmanship in the Island Council will become very clear in the days and possibly weeks ahead. Already, it should be clear to everyone that the victory scored yesterday by William Marlin’s National Alliance, which successfully tabled and passed a motion of no confidence in Telecommunications Commissioner Maria Buncamper-Molanus, is but a pyrrhic victory. For, while the records will show that the Island Council by a vote of five to four said it had no confidence in Buncamper-Molanus, from all indications that constitutional body is currently powerless to do anything about Buncamper-Molanus’ tenure as a member of the Island and Executive Councils.

It is also already very evident that notwithstanding the fleeting embarrassment of Buncamper-Molanus having to go on camera and tell “the world” as it were that that she had tendered her resignation as a commissioner and member of the Executive Council because of some “semblance of conflict of interest” – which the world knows is grounded in nepotism – her tendering of her resignation will have no far-reaching consequences.

Of course, while the Executive Council has not yet met to consider and accept or reject Buncamper-Molanus’ resignation, Democratic Party leader Sarah Wescot-Williams has already indicated that the DP will be asking Buncamper-Molanus to reconsider her decision.

No one has to be a “betting person” to put his or her money on the right horse here. Of course Buncamper-Molanus will reconsider her decision. Of course it is only a matter of time that, notwithstanding all the euphoria in some circles about yesterday’s double whammy – the successful no-confidence vote and the announced resignation of a member of the Executive Council, Buncamper-Molanus will be restored to her place of eminence.

The truth is that, after all the hullabaloo and after the dust has settled in a few days, it will be widely recognised that in some politicians’ world political expediency and political survival are like two peas in a pod and the only things that really matter.
