Foster Families Central
to be opened Wednesday

PHILIPSBURG--Foundation Judiciary Institutions Windward Islands (FJIWI) has received funding through the Netherlands Antilles Security Plan for the execution of the project Foster Families Central. Minister of Justice David Dick will officially open the Central’s office on Wednesday, August 18.

Foster Families Central is aimed to increase the availability of foster homes that cater to children placed under protective measures by the Court in St. Maarten.

According to the Convention on the Rights of Children, every child has the right to a family, care, and a proper upbringing, but too often children are separated from their parents for one reason or another.

Sometimes, judicial authorities deem it necessary and in accordance with the law that such separation is in the child’s best interest. But a child who is temporarily or permanently deprived of his or her family is entitled to special protection and assistance provided by the state. One of the instruments to provide such care will be Foster Families Central.

In St. Maarten there are many children who are in need of special care, attention and affection from persons who are willing to make a difference by providing short-term or long-term foster care.

Foster Families Central falls within the framework of the Netherlands Antilles Security Plan and is being financed by Implementation Organisation Foundation Development Netherlands Antilles USONA with Dutch development funds.
