Carnival stakeholders will
not support current SCDF

PHILIPSBURG--The Carnival stakeholders’ group has made it clear in a letter to the Executive Council that if the current president and treasurer of St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) continue to arrange next year’s festivities, the group will not support their efforts.

As the saga of the organisation of St. Maarten’s 40th Carnival anniversary celebrations continues, the Carnival stakeholders said in a letter to the council, a copy of which was provided to The Daily Herald, “We have done all that we can in order to safeguard St. Maarten’s 40th Anniversary Carnival from certain failure. The meetings and communications thus far have proven absolutely futile and have yielded no affirmative results.”

Therefore, the group informed the council in a letter that it was resolute and would maintain its position. This newspaper contacted SCDF Treasurer Mario Gumbs, who said SCDF also maintained its position, which is to continue with the preparations for the 40th anniversary Carnival.

It was understood last week that the only member forming Task Force 40, Culture Department head Neville York, had held a meeting with the stakeholders and another with SCDF, but apparently no compromise or resolution was reached.
