Isla refinery, same sex marriages
prominent during budget debates
PHILIPSBURG--Dutch Parliamentarian Ineke van Gent believes something has to be done about the pollution caused by the Isla refinery in Curaçao and same sex marriages have to be acknowledged in the Dutch Caribbean islands.
The Groen Links political faction in the Dutch Second Chamber wants to tackle several matters in the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba during the debates on the Kingdom budget 2009 starting end of October.
She also wants to establish a fund for professional sportsmen and -women in the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.
For Groen Links, the Isla refinery will be priority number one during the budget debates. Van Gent believes measures should be taken to prevent more harm being done to the health of the citizens.
Despite the possible consequences for local employment, she believes the refinery should be closed temporarily, if necessary, if no solution can be found. She said the people’s health should come before everything else, even work.
Other topics on which Van Gent said she would be focusing are poverty and same-sex marriages. Her point of view is that same-sex marriages should be acknowledged in the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba without any further discussion.
