Island prepared for
possible flooding

~ARF urges residents to shelter animals~

PHILIPSBURG--As the passage of Tropical Storm Omar continues to affect the local area, the island is ready for more rain and possible flooding in low lying areas today, Wednesday, and Thursday, said Public Works Department Head of Maintenance Claudius Buncamper.

The levels in Fresh Pond and Great Salt Pond have been lowered considerably to accommodate excess rain and run off water from the storm. “Water has been constantly pumped out via Rolandus Canal to the sea. All preparations have been made as if we will be hit by a storm, just as a precaution.”

Fresh Pond Channel, which links with Great Bay, has been prepped for opening should this become necessary to drain water from the island very fast. Trenches and other waterways were also cleared.

Buncamper urged residents to pay close attention to the weather and take precautions around their properties to guard against flooding. “The system will bring a lot of water. We are not so worried about wind, because most of the buildings can withstand a Category 1 hurricane, but contractors need to take measures at their building sites.”

As the weather conditions worsen, Animal R Friends Foundation urge residents to provide sufficient shelter for their pets, especially dogs, and their livestock.

“Too often we see dogs chained outside in a yard with no form of shelter against the hot sun or the rain, which is heartbreaking to see and very cruel towards the animals,” the group said.

“During heavy rainfall and/or strong winds, do not keep your dog outside without shelter. Please, bring your dog inside the house, or if this is not possible, provide another dry and safe spot, such as a garage or a leak-free doghouse,” the group added. “Do not keep the dogs chained up, especially during stormy conditions. This is a dangerous situation for the animals. Be a responsible pet-owner, provide shelter for your animals and be safe.”
