If there is a criminal investigation
Laveist should resign, says Duncan
PHILIPSBURG--If there is a criminal investigation ongoing Commissioner Louie Laveist should resign and let justice take its course. If the investigation proves that Laveist is innocent he can always return as a Commissioner, says Home Affairs Minister Roland Duncan.
Laveist was arrested on October 22 and his pre-trial detention was extended by eight more days last week Friday.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party (DP) as the sole governing party has been pondering how to deal with the situation. DP leader Commissioner Sarah Wescot-Williams said the first order of business would be to redistribute Laveist’s portfolios among the other four Commissioners.
The redistributing is expected to take place either today, Monday, or tomorrow. The DP will be seeking contact with Laveist’s lawyer, as direct communication with the Commissioner is not possible at this moment.
Wescot-Williams said Laveist’s possible resignation was not something on which Government could take a position, as he was still being investigated on certain charges.
