ExCo redistributes
Laveist’s portfolios

PHILIPSBURG--The Executive Council approved on Tuesday the temporary re-distribution of the portfolios of Commissioner Louie Laveist. Democratic Party leader Commissioner Sarah Wescot-Williams is expected to disclose more detailed information on the re-distribution of portfolios during today’s Executive Council press briefing.

The DP board met with the party leader Tuesday evening to discuss the political consequences of Laveist’s arrest, in particular, his possible resignation as Commissioner and Island Council member.

The only information Wescot-Williams wanted to disclose on the matter yesterday was that before taking any further steps the party would wait another two days to see what happens and to further assess the situation when the first eight-day extension of Laveist’s pre-trial detention came to an end.

However, The Daily Herald has learned from reliable sources that Wescot-Williams had a chance to communicate with Laveist on Tuesday to discuss the consequences for government of the island in general now that he has been detained.

The DP has a one-seat majority in the Island Council, but with Laveist not able to attend Island Council meetings, the party cannot present the Island Council with any important policies it wants to execute because it cannot form a majority in the council.
