March against domestic violence
to be organised Tuesday evening

MARIGOT--In the wake of the senseless killings of Nejumbia Fleming and her baby daughter Ronélia in the early morning hours of last Thursday, a silent march and candlelit vigil will take place in Marigot on Tuesday evening November 4 at 6:30pm.

Concerned persons, family, and friends of Nejumbia will gather for the march at the roundabout at the entrance to St. James near the BFC Bank. The march will end on the waterfront in Marigot where participants will gather for prayers and listen to testimonies of encouragement.

Marchers are asked to wear the colour purple or also the colour white for the innocence of Ronélia Fleming.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, former Municipal Councillor Aline Choisy said she hopes the march will send a strong message to offenders to stop the cycle of domestic violence and encourage victims to overcome the stigma associated with it and report abuse.

Choisy is inviting all Dutch side associations specialised in women’s issues and domestic violence to join in the march and there are plans to form “Association Nejumbia” which will support and counsel abused women on the French side. She is inviting women interested in forming this association to meet her on Tuesday evening.

“We also welcome all those who are concerned about violence in general, whether it is in our homes, schools, or on the streets, to join us,” she added. “Please bring a candle as we remember Nejumbia and Ronelia Fleming who have been so brutally taken from our hearts. This is not the time to give up and turn our backs. We have to find solutions to eradicate the violence that is conquering our island day by day.”

Two suspects were held by Dutch side police on Thursday following the murders, one of whom was Nejumbia’s boy friend and father of her baby.

Aline Choisy can be contacted on (0690) 55.41.48 or on the Dutch side 555-1828.
