DP respects Louie’s
decision not to resign

PHILIPSBURG--Democratic Party (DP) leader Commissioner Sarah Wescot-Williams agreed on Wednesday that the decision to resign or not to resign as an Island Council Member was very personal. In this regard, she said she respected the position taken by Commissioner Louie Laveist, despite the fact that DP’s position on the matter differed.

Based on Laveist’s arrest on October 22, Wescot-Williams had said she was confident of Laveist’s good judgement and believed that a resignation in such a case would be in his best interest and that of the country and the party.

However, the two Commissioners had several further discussions on the matter in the meantime, and at this point in time, Wescot-Williams said, Laveist has clearly indicated how he feels about his seat in the Island Council.

“It’s a judgement call the commissioner as an individual has made,” Wescot-Williams said. Regarding Laveist not resigning either as a Commissioner, Wescot Williams said, “It’s a different matter where it pertains to his membership in the Executive Council of St. Maarten,” but left it up to Laveist to make any announcement in that regard.

Finally, Wescot-Williams said she believed it was not correct to state that DP did not have a majority in the Island Council, because Laveist had not indicated that he was not a member of the DP anymore. “He will continue to hold the seat in the Island Council on the same premise that he got in the Island Council,” she said.
