Getting the story straight

Dear Editor,
It is sad that people would bring these two stories together, not knowing the truth, even in death.
The story with Shawn Maccow: my son Leonado Carter a.k.a. Nado was beaten on the Thursday. Before the bat beating, he was kicked and severely beaten by Shawn. Before leaving the scene, Shawn told my son that it was not over yet. My son was in severe pain. He could not make it to school on the Friday. He never told me the story because he did not want me to get involved. All my son said to me is that he had a fall. Shawn's plans were to meet him after school to finish him off, but that day he did not go to school.
Nado went by his friend to play with his PlayStation. Someone told Shawn where he was and Shawn came demanding the bike of Nado. He said he was going with it and no one could stop him.
The friend of Nado came outside and said, "You cannot go with that bike; it is Nado bike."
Shawn with a temper/rage said no one could stop him: "I am going with this bike today." The friend who Nado was by told Shawn to leave the yard. Shawn repeated that he was going with this bike today.
After the friend saw things getting out of hand, he called Nado. Nado came outside and said: "Please leave my bike alone and please leave the yard, for I do not want no trouble." He repeated this several times, but Shawn insisted on going with the bike (which was owned by Nado).
After Nado saw that he insisted that he was going with his bike, Nado took up a bat to scare him off, and he still insisted on going with the bike. Nado lost his temper and swung the bat. I was not there to know how many times Nado hit him; Shawn and Nado were never friends. Shawn was always jealous of Nado. He was jealous of the fact that his good friend did not want to be his friend anymore – after the murder case which Shawn was involved in at Mary's Fancy.
For that, the friend did not want to be in his company. Nado did not know the people involved in the case. Shawn went to prison. With the amount of comments that was placed in "SXM Times" as well as in the newspaper etc., you would think that Shawn was an innocent bystander, but Shawn was involved in other crimes, which he took prison time for.
Shawn used to trouble Nado, and Nado never hit Shawn back, and there were people who were around who witnessed the beatings of my son by Shawn. Months later, after the court case, I learned that Shawn was dropped off where the incident occurred to finish off my son, and the friend who dropped him off went back for a gun. When the friend returned with the gun, the fatal incident had already taken place. When the friend saw what happened he said this is not the f......... way this had to go down. It was Nado who was supposed to be killed at that time, and Nado killed Shawn in self defence.
While serving his prison time, Nado was introduced to a GED program after 2 ½ weeks. He did not get the opportunity to study, but he was determined to take the challenge and did the exam with 14 other inmates who had studied for the exam. In spite of him not having the opportunity to study, he came out successfully. Out of 600 points, he came out with 558 points.
My son also took computer courses at the prison and came out with an A+. When he came out, he enrolled at the University of SXM to follow business executive administration & finance. Months later, he discontinued because that was my dream not his. I chose that for him because he was good with maths. His dream was to be an engineer. He worked day and night on bikes, and made his own bike from scratch. That was his passion. He was about to fulfil his dream in the area of engineering.
Nado, my son, tried to be a positive person in spite of his downfall. In spite of what negative things were said about my son, he was not an alcoholic. He had no involvement with gangs, drugs or anything of that sort. He was a helpful person. Many times he helped those who hurt him. He forgave them, never kept malice.
In fact, he helped those that asked for his help. When they were confronted with a situation pertaining to bikes, whether they were his friend or not.
There are always two sides to a story, and before people be judgmental, they should have their facts straight. The Bible says whoever has no sin cast the first stone. Many cast stones, but all of us have failed in some way or another. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
In closing, for those who did not know Leonado Carter a.k.a. Nado, he cannot speak now, but he always tried to stay out of trouble. He was a loving, caring, kind-hearted, hardworking, helpful, ambitious and forgiving person.

Please leave my son rest in peace,

His mother Ms. Valerie Carter
