PHILIPSBURG--St. Maarten boxer Claudette Alexander is set to retire after she fights one last time in Colombia.
Alexander is scheduled to fight Stefani Cassiani as part of the 45th anniversary celebration of the World Boxing Council. The bout will be held in the Santa Marta Coliseum April 30.
Also going to fight from the Friendly Island will be Barbara Lancine. She will face Omayra Suarez.
"It was a tough decision to retire," said Alexander. "But I'm not getting younger or the support a boxer needs."
Alexander it quick to point out that in her heart she will be representing St. Maarten when she steps into the ring in Colombia. However the boxing license the professional fighter will be using will have been issued by Colombia.
"I could never get a boxing license from St. Maarten," said Alexander.
She also recalls all the bouts promoters promised, that she prepared hard for, but never materialised. "I'm only giving up fighting. I will continue to train young boxers," said Alexander.
Alexander had long waits between bouts. She knocked out Elba Velasquez in February 2000. Alexander returned to the ring in Antigua August 2000 and in the feather weight division defeated Ria Ramnarine.
Her next fight was in February 2001 on St. Thomas. Alexander lost a unanimous decision to Alicia Ashley.
Next up was Olga Heron in October 2002. Alexander lost another unanimous decision bringing her pro fighter record to 4-2.
