LEXINGTON--St. Maarten's Agnes Gumbs was one of several Little League Baseball and Softball volunteers honoured at the District Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, during the 25th annual Little League International Congress held in Lexington, Kentucky recently.
The award recipients were recognized for their voluntary service that supports and perpetuates the ideals of Little League and for their commitment to the healthy development of children.
Gumbs received the 2010 Little League Baseball and Softball Commendation Award for 17 years of service to Little League, eight of which have been served as assistant district administrator.
"Each of the honorees have gone above and beyond the call to help make this organization the envy of all youth sports organizations," Stephen D. Kenner, Chief Executive Officer and President of Little League International, said. "Their extensive work on behalf of the children and adult volunteers in their district is exemplary. We are very thankful to have people like those we honored in the Little League Baseball and Softball family."
Every three years at the Little League Congress, the Meritorious Service Award is given to a deserving District Administrator (DA). The Commendation Award is given to Assistant District Administrators (ADA).
There are approximately 650 District Administrators in the nine Little League Baseball and Softball regions around the world. They are volunteers who are elected by those in their districts to counsel, direct, and provide leadership in the policies and rules of the Little League program and to serve as the liaison between the local leagues and the regional director.
The Assistant District Administrators assist the District Administrators with all aspects of operations in their area.
Little League Baseball and Softball is the world's largest organized youth sports program, with nearly 2.6 million players and 1 million adult volunteers in every U.S. state and scores of other countries.
The St. Maarten Little League kicks off the 2010 season today with a parade through Philipsburg and the Opening Ceremony at the Stadium on the Pondfill beginning at 1:00pm.
