Anguilla's Shara Proctor continues top performance

ANGUILLA--At the Virginia Tech Elite Meet held last weekend at Rector Field House, Shara Proctor of Anguilla continued her good performances.

As the senior jumper she turned in the second best mark in the world this year in the indoor long jump that highlighted the opening day.

The Virginia Tech Elite Meet features a handful of top teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the South Eastern Conference. It took place amidst temperatures in the low 30s and up to 6.5 inches of snow.

Proctor is the reigning South Eastern Conference (SEC) Female Field Athlete of the week, and won the women's long jump with a nation-leading mark of 6.67m/21-10.75, which bettered her previous best mark of 6.60m/21-8 and broke her own school record for the second consecutive week. It was the 12th best women's long jump in collegiate history.

Proctor, whose mark is second only in the world to the mark of 6.69m turned in by the Ukraine's Viktoriya Rybalko last week, set a Rector Field House facility record and charted an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark for the second week in a row.

"The big thing about Shara is that she and Coach O'Neal have put together a plan to get a little bit better each week," Chief Coach Holloway said. "She's consistently doing that. She had the No. 12 jump in NCAA history tonight. That's a huge jump and I think everybody has taken notice of what she has been able to accomplish this season."
