Discovering the clown in yourself means bringing more joy, love and pleasure to your life and to the life of others. Baba-Yaga will be back on stage for your pure enjoyment on Saturday, January 28, at 8:00pm sharp.
Last December, Imbali Centre for Creative Movement and Albina Matuzko brought the theatrical production "Baba-Yaga" to St. Maarten. This was so very successful that there have been many calls for the show to be staged again. Baba-Yaga is a production which has been performed for international audiences to much acclaim. The show also received appreciative reviews from local audiences.
Baba-Yaga is a well known Slavic folklore character known for being mad, bad, dangerous, hag-like and ugly. Baba-Yaga – Russia's most popular fairytale character – originated in the small textiles towns in the country. On the outskirts of one of these towns, the authorities have built a memorial to her in the shape of her hut which stands on chicken legs; standing near the hut is a figurine that takes on her witchlike appearance. The hut has become one of the most frequented tourist locations.
"Klusha" is Matuzko's clown character and, in this role, the clown allows the story to unfold with audience participation. The clown in each of us comes to the fore when seeing this unforgettable performance.
The show is never exactly the same because, as the production unfolds, Klusha discovers that Baba-Yaga is actually elements that live deep within her therefore the nature of the story is altered in the telling with the participation of each audience.
This modern clown theatre is for adults only, as it is an intimate, philosophical and vulnerable kind of comedy. Be sure not to miss this incredible theatre production in conjunction with Imbali Centre for Creative Movement and Clara Reyes.
The event will be staged at John Larmonie Centre on Longwall Road. Cost for admittance is $15 and tickets are on sale at Pete's Photo, Van Dorp Edine – Madame Estate & Simpson Bay, Top Carrot, Thierry Gumbs, Imbali and Motiance Dance Company and from cast members.
