He has a heart for young people and believes we are relationship oriented beings. He wants to see young people be successful in what they do and feel appreciated. Since he's been back on the island and is involved through his work with young people, he has been part of the Wealth Creation Project Team (from Victorious Living Foundation) during October- November 2010 and is the Vice President and Co –Coordinator of the Y2X –Youth 2 Extreme. Here we get to know this St. Maarten lad with a unique British accent!
Where are you from?
I am originally from St. Maarten, but have moved around, and ended up living in England (amongst other places) for 8 years.
Where did you go to school?
I attended St. Joseph Primary school then went on to MPC before I left the island.
Why did you go to England?
I went to England to further my studies. My first Study was in Midwifery, but I decided to switch halfway to Counselling due to an opportunity that came up. After graduating Goldsmith University in London, I completed my post Graduate Diploma in Inter-Cultural Group Therapy and Counselling, June 2009. I worked in various organizations commercially while training in the medical field and also became president of the International Students Association for 3 years at the University of Hertfordshire. This position required me to lead a team of students, representing up to 5000 International Students at the University and as an advocate for integration and academic challenges, and organizing various activities all of which I enjoyed a lot.
Why did you return to St. Maarten?
An opportunity presented itself at the right time with the Ministry of Justice here in St. Maarten. Since February 2011 I have been working at the Court Of Guardianship. My function there is Social Worker, and my daily routine requires me to council parents who are going through divorce and child custody and also working with juvenile cases. I have recently been more involved with juvenile cases and give early intervention interviews to juveniles while they are in custody at the Police Station.
We hear you have a background in radio, please tell us about that!
Radio is my major hobby since April 1994. I presented my own radio show during this time as a Disc Jockey on PJD2 & 102.7FM from 1994-1995 for a morning show called "Sunday Night Grooves" and a daytime show as well. My focus was presenting high quality shows with a difference to the audience; a radio show that can invoke a new way of thinking. In 1995, before I left to the Netherlands and while living in Curaçao, I embarked on starting my own radio show called Radio Semiya on 98.1FM, which was a Christian radio station. The radio show called "YSB VIBES" was geared towards teenagers on Curaçao & students of SXM, Saba & Statia. I also did a weekend show called "The Weekend Jam Session" on Saturday afternoons which was more of an entertainment show on Radio Tropical. I then moved to the Netherlands in 1996 to pursue the first part of my medical studies. During this time I presented the Student Radio Show between "98-"99 in the Cities of Delft and Leiden to help Dutch and Antillean Students make the right career choices called "Student Vibes". I also worked as a co-presenter for an R&B and Hip Hop show in which I did many interviews with American artists of those Genres in 1999.
In January – June 2002 I presented a Radio Show in Rotterdam to inspire young people. I then had a major break in my career from 2007-2010 and started presenting 3 major radio shows at the University of Hertfordshire, England. These were "Love & Inspiration", "International Voice" & "Insight".
What were the highlights of this time?
In the fall of 2008, I received three nominations from the National Student Radio Awards in London for the categories of Best Male Presenter, Best Entertainment Program and Best Interviewer.
Please tell us about your current involvement with radio here on St. Maarten!
As of Saturday August 6th and Sunday August 11th 2011, I will be presenting two exciting new radio shows to SXM called "The Vibes" on Saturdays from 1:00p.m. -3:00p.m. and "Love & Inspiration" on Sundays from 2:00p.m.-4:00p.m. on Youth Radio 92.5FM. In a nutshell "The Vibes" is full-on entertaining shows on what's happening around SXM. This is especially for those students abroad to connect with what's going on back home. There will also be quizzes for prizes, and of course music
My other show "Love & Inspiration" focuses on very interesting topics and tips on experiencing a more meaningful relationship, whether it's a friendship, love-relationship or relationships in general - bringing an inspiring aspect to it. There will be prizes of course and music of excellence.
What Roy explains he is trying to do is bring more awareness to people on how to value life and to appreciate others, and to acknowledge the fact that we all have something to give.
