Every year, there is a list of New Year’s resolutions; mostly it is about stopping smoking or drinking, or losing weight. Now there is nothing wrong with that; but when volunteering, no matter in what field, you help others plus yourself.
Volunteering or helping others is always a positive thing to do. It keeps you busy, so there is no time to smoke, drink or overeat; it keeps you active on your feet. Running around using energy and being busy can be like a workout in the gym and that’s good for the waistline; it can also save you the yearly gym fees. But let’s forget about ourselves; we humans have nothing to complain about. There are many ways to donate your precious time and energy.
Think of the animals who have no voice or rights; they could surely use some more helping hands. Call your vet or check out the animal foundations on the island and offer your help. It’s easy; simply pick up the phone and call. You will make lots of human friends and animal friends as well. But please make sure you are seriously committed.
There are some boys who need to be put in the spotlight for giving a helping hand to the animals. These guys are Shervin, Jovani, Romel, Randal and O.J., who recently joined the team. Every Sunday afternoon, we meet and go on the road to feed stray animals – mostly cats and dogs in need – and we talk with owners about the solution to pet overpopulation, which is spaying the females or neutering the male pets.
These Sunday field trips are the most rewarding and fun part of the week. Never a dull moment! Sometimes sad things happen too, but that is part of life… We have fun or serious discussions in the car and sometimes we have an animal-friendly lunch or go to fun events together. These great guys know where to go or what to do. I’m always looking forward to volunteering with this team. Quite often, they have some juicy adventure stories to tell and they give an extra fun dimension to volunteering for the animals.
If we can do it, anybody can do it. It pays off in heart and mind to help an animal or just be kind. Hey guys, our next trip will be a well deserved treat to the movies. Thanks for a great 2011. Please continue to be an example to others and hopefully we will be a great team again in 2012. Happy New Year! Keep it safe and joyful without fireworks and injuries. Thanks for helping the animals.
