The Tijon Parfumerie & Boutique celebrated its 1,500th and 1,501st persons "creating their own fragrance" on January 8. Jo-Anna Lein and Shelley Watt from British Columbia, Canada, were off the cruise ship Carnival Miracle. Both discovered Tijon on TripAdvisor.
Jo-Anna is a team leader of social workers and probation officers in the city of Vernon, and owns and operates an aesthetics studio, while Shelley serves as a librarian for the National Energy Board in Calgary. Jo-Anna labelled her perfume "Vital Escape" after her aesthetics shop called Vital Visions. It was an attractive, crisp, lighter floral scent. Shelley named hers "Summer Day," a sweeter scent with a warm undertone and a hint of citrus.
"Both were knowledgeable and most attentive students, who did an outstanding job recognizing oils in bringing a high level of skill and creativity to their attractive new scents," observed John Berglund, Tijon's perfumer and instructor.
When asked why not celebrate the 1,000th person creating his/her own fragrance, Berglund smiled, saying, "We forgot to do so. When we first looked up the number of participants, we counted over 1,300 and focused on celebrating our 1500th."
Tijon, located in Grand Case where the French airport road intersects the beach road, is likely the only place in the entire world where one can choose from more than 300 oils to create his/her own fragrance. Sounds daunting, but they make it easy with workbooks, cheat sheets and personal hands-on assistance. The hardest part for most is coming up with a name for their own fragrance.
Tijon offers two "make your own fragrance" classes. Perfume Class 101 is a two- to three-hour class that instructs participants on the history of perfume, the importance of our sense of smell and the art of perfume making. Classmates, such as Jo-Anna and Shelley, then retreat to the lab in an effort to create and bottle their own perfume, choosing as many oils as they'd like.
The shorter class offered is the "Mix & Match" class that takes about one hour plus; all guests leave having created their own bottle of perfume/cologne, choosing from selected pre-mixed oils, and then adding a select number of oils from the perfume organ.
